The Problem

Due to the pandemic, going out and ordering your favorite drink had proven to be challenging. Businesses saw a reduction of sales and customers missed out on social
gatherings. COVID-19 has made ordering drinks risky due to social contact in enclosed spaces during the ordering and process.

Constraints

The client approached us at the MVP development stage of this product. Doug has completed his own user research on target users. We were not allowed to access any data based on his users, therefore we relied on his anecdotal experience.
The Client required wireframes to be developed in a short turn-around to present to investors. The client did not have to budget to pursue usability testing.

Key Contributions

  • Streamlined the drink ordering and checkout process, reducing friction by leveraging familiar mobile-ordering patterns.
  • Highlighted potential pitfalls in ID verification API reliability, ensuring proactive mitigation of fraud and usability risks.
  • Translated anecdotal user research into actionable design priorities, ensuring the app reflected core values of safety and social connection.

The Solution

Doug Smith (Founder of the Cheers app) saw this as an opportunity to launch a drinks pre-ordering app that can inspire creativity and discovery of the NYC bar scene. Users can simply search or discover drinks by personal taste, by trend and bar proximity. The user simply orders through the app and the bar can receive the order and review verified ID contact-free.

The Process

Teaming up with Clare, we kicked off the project with a discovery call to align on the client’s goals, users, and budget. I translated key user needs into design priorities, ensuring the product reflected the business’s core value. Together, we mapped user flows from the client’s brainstorm and brought them to life in Figma with interactive wireframes. To optimize usability, we referenced proven mobile-ordering patterns from apps like Starbucks and DoorDash—leveraging familiar flows to reduce friction and accelerate user adoption.

"We saw opportunities to develop a business-centered dashboard."

Key Learnings

During our analysis, we identified a strategic opportunity to develop a business-focused dashboard. Clare and I recognized that offering business owners greater control over drink ordering and ID verification would drive stronger adoption among key partners. However, we encountered feasibility concerns regarding the speed and reliability of the ID verification API. This presented potential risks - both in terms of fraudulent ID submissions and bar staff's ability to confidently verify customer identities against uploaded documents. We flagged these challenges early to address them in our technical planning.
